#25x1000MundaneWords

While having my morning’s coffee this afternoon, I was thinking about the post that I put up last night. I was thinking that there has to be something more that I can do, something simple, to bring attention to a current event that has gripped me.

I don’t know why the Syrian refugee crisis and the recent attacks in Paris have struck a particular cord with me, but they have, and I’ll strum along. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my parents came to Canada in the early ’70s when many Ismaili Muslims did as refugees (my parents weren’t refugees). I don’t know.

Anyway, I remembered a history professor of mine – a stout, bald, moustachioed, military historian – from university, who once said that the greatest thing about Canada is how boring it is. It’s true, and it’s wonderful.

This led me to thinking about a video I once made about the mundane; I’m intrigued by the mundane. It’s probably my best work to date. Check it out:

I then started thinking about a photography project by a high school chum of mine. From here, I thought about Stina Sanders losing over 3000 followers on Instagram when she posted photos of her daily life, instead of her model shots.

All of these little thoughts, combined with the knowledge that the federal government of Canada has pledged to accept at least 25 000 Syrian refugees, led to the idea of a simple photo project: post 25 – because a picture is worth a 1000 words – photos of the mundane aspects of your life, using the hashtag #25x1000MundaneWords.

All I want to do is give people fleeing hardships 25 boring and mundane things to look forward to. That’s it.

I’ll be posting the photos to my Instagram feed, which should then traverse the web and end up on my Twitter and Facebook feeds. I’ll compile a post with all 25 photos once the project is done.

I encourage you to follow along, and even to participate yourself. If you want us to follow along, please let your handle (that’s what it’s called, right?) in the comments. I’m looking forward to seeing how wonderfully mundane your life really is.

And, to get us started:
