    I asked what it’s like to be white

    It must’ve come as quite a surprise when I raised my hand at the meeting and asked, “What is it like to be white?” I’d been preparing myself to ask the question since the last meeting a month ago.

    For the last few weeks, I’ve been updating a document I started to keep my thoughts and ideas on equity, diversity, and inclusion in. I wanted to make sure that I thought through what I wanted to say. And, I often get a bit fired up by these discussions and need an outlet. After today’s meeting, there are some updates to be made.

    More than anything, I’m glad that I asked the question. I wanted to and I did it. That felt good.

    Quiet the actions, uphold the ideas and values

    Doing something worth writing about has been particularly challenging for me, especially as of late. Perhaps, it isn’t so much about the “doing” itself as it is about understanding the value in what I’m doing. As we go about our days, things happen. We are all doing something and are having an impact on the world. Knowing what to write about based on what we do, well, that’s the hard part.
