  • Mesmerizing Swirls: Chatoyant Curly Maple Rollerball Pen

In today’s video, I turn an Odyssey rollerball pen using stabilized curly maple, infused with lime green, and matte black pearl hardware. This was my first time turning stabilized wood and it went okay. It was dustier than I was expecting but it sanded out really well. I forgot to replace the cutter head on my chisel, which did make it a bit of a slow go until I realized my mistake. The chatoyance on this wood is phenomenal, making it a truly one-of-a-kind pen.

It’s been a slow day but I did manage to make it to the shop. I just finished working on this pen:

It’s gotten cold again so the shop is a bit frigid. Another Saturday night.

  • Ancient Bog Oak Turned Into a Brand New Algonquin Rollerball Pen | Pen Turning

In today’s video, I turn an Algonquin rollerball pen with Ancient Bog Oak and black titanium hardware. I wasn’t sure how this one would turn out because the wood was chipping a bit when I was milling the blank to size. Luckily, the wood cut really nicely with a sharp carbide chisel. The black on black looks really slick to me.

  • Pen Turning | Redheart Budget Fancy Slimline Pencil

In today’s video, I turn a Budget Fancy Slimline pencil with Redheart wood and gold hardware. I really like turning this wood. It cuts really nicely with the carbide chisels, leaving a fairly smooth finish. Apparently, the colour will darken over time but I haven’t seen it happen yet with any of the other pens I’ve turned.

  • Pen Turning | Red Box Burl Headwind Ballpoint Pen

In today’s video, I turn a Headwind ballpoint pen using Red Box Burl and gunmetal hardware. Turning this one was a bit tricky. I had to be sure to take my time and keep an eye on my work because of the many voids in the wood. I chose a CA finish to help fill in some of those voids and for the glossy look. If I were to do it again, I’d probably choose a more matte finish. This pen feels really nice to hold, and I’m thinking that I might make it my new daily carry.

  • Pen Turning | European Round Top with Palo Santo Rosewood and Chrome Hardware

In today’s pen turning video, I turn a European Round Top pen using Palo Santo Rosewood and chrome hardware. I like turning this wood. I love how nicely it turns and how it finishes. The best part has to be how the wood will change over the next couple of weeks, lightening up and exposing green veins. Turning the tenon for this pen kit is a bit annoying but I think that the effort is rewarded with the result.

  • Pen Turning | Jim Beam Whisky Barrel Oak Algonquin Rollerball with Satin Chrome Hardware

In this week’s pen turning video, I turn an Algonquin rollerball pen using Oak from a Jim Beam whisky barrel and with satin chrome hardware. I enjoyed turning this pen. For a while, I was mulling over how to shape it but things came together nicely as soon as I put the blanks on the lathe. I used Yorkshire Grit fine and microfine after sanding to 600 grit. The finish is Doctor’s Woodshop Pens Plus, a friction polish. I quite like how this pen turned out. This pen is one of a dozen for a project I’m working on for a buddy of mine – he’ll have these available through his clothing store.
