It felt like I made some progress with the boxes today. I must’ve started working on them about a month ago and it’s been uphill since. Today, though, things seemed to fit together real nice.

Tomorrow, I have to continue working on the boxes. There’s still a fair bit to do before they’re done but at least I can see the progress I’m making.

It’s when you overcome a challenge that you realize how far you travelled while persevering through it. While you’re in it, like being in a tunnel, you know you’re going forward but the view through the windows isn’t changing. When you exit the tunnel, the distance you travelled is measured by how long it feels from the entrance.

These damn laser-cut pencil boxes are going to be the end of me. I must’ve spent another six or eight hours working on the design again today. I was hoping to work on another tea light lantern; something for Mother’s Day. These stupid pencil boxes just aren’t coming together the way I want them to.

Whatever I’m working on ends up on my desk, as if my mind is offloading whatever it is carrying onto it. As the days pass, there’s less space for me to write my morning pages, rest my elbow, and put a cat who’s come to visit me. I’ll eventually hit a tipping point and stop everything I’m doing to organize myself.

I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment when I measured the corner angles on the box I made a couple of days ago. They come together at 90° angle. Brilliant.

This seems simple enough, and, truthfully, it is. Still, it’s taken me at least a year to get a joint this clean and precise. A lot of wood has been cut and glued together at irregular angles in order for me to have been able to put these four pieces of wood together this accurately.

I left the shop today with a sense of success.

Playing used to mean going outside to ride my bike, play street hockey, shoot hoops in the driveway, or build something with Lego. It made senses to call those activities “playing” because they were fun and carefree. Going to the playground wouldn’t be all that much fun if it were work.

The chest is built. It’s not finished yet. Over the next couple of days, I’ll sand it some more, shellac the inside, paint the outside, and try to do something about the curves that form the legs.

I already want to build another one. I’m thinking that I should make a list of things that I’d do differently. Perhaps, I could put together my own plans.

I have got to get back to turning, too. I’m missing it.

I continued working on the chest after work today. I did cut some corners and ended up using an oscillating multi-tool to do some sanding but it’s still looking pretty good. I’ll screw it all together tomorrow and then start working on the lid.

I’ve been working at this idea for about a month. It’s finally come together. Of course, I was hoping that I’d have everything sorted out sooner but it’s better now than never. Plus, it’s an idea I can keep building on.

I’ve been working on this type of box.

I’m a bit late on it, but I thought I would try to make a Mother’s Day gift set. It’ll include this type of box, a pen, some handmade paper, and a couple of candles. I’m hoping to have three ready by Friday.

I texted my girlfriend last night to see if she’d be ready around 9:30 this morning to drive out to Vaughan. Again. I told her that we should go early to miss as much traffic as possible.

It was just after 11:00 when I picked her up.
