What makes a good leader?

There’s a great line in Yes, Prime Minister, when Hacker says to Humphrey, “I am their leader. I must follow them.” What a brilliant, clever piece of writing to express exactly what effective leadership is.

A great leader knows how to listen, how to hear what’s being said. Their objective is not to speak until it comes time to do so. When they do speak, what they say must be in line with what they have heard and aligned with where they want to go. Steering a ship is pointless if you haven’t got the power to propel you forward.

Great leaders provide opportunities. They are perceptive and intuitive, understanding how people fill spaces. They give you room. They open the doors, too.

Leadership is about the progress of the people, not the person.
