Play seems to be a function of intention. If you’re just shooting hoops with some friends, that’s playing. If you’re trying to get better at getting the ball in the hole, that’s practicing. If you’re getting paid to throw a ball into a net, that’s work. Essentially, the activity is all the same.
I would say that I play on the daily. When I’m at the workshop, I say that I’m “playing” when I’m working on something. I’m not a gamer, but I play the New York Times’ Daily Mini, Wordle, and Connections. Those are fun. Sometimes, I’ll work on a digital puzzle. For the last couple of days, I’ve been playing a racing car game, which I’ll tire of soon enough.
Not everything I do during the day is immediately purposeful. Some of what I do during the day is simply to enjoy the process. To me, that’s playful.
