Prongs on a Fork

Every time I’ve sat down to do some journalling over the last two weeks, my plans for the summer have been top of mind. I’ve been desperately trying to figure out what I want to do with the nine weeks that lay ahead of me. The practice of looking forward with no clear idea of which path to take has probably gotten me to where I am today.

Here’s what I know: I want to make things. I want to build with cardboard and LEGO, make videos, write blog posts, take pictures, and record a podcast. I also want to go fly fishing.

Right. Problem solved. Nine weeks isn’t enough time to do all of those things. I should be sorted.

Here’s what I don’t know: what am I trying to achieve with any of these pursuits?

I want to say something about life and my experiences with it. I want to build things that are interesting to make and see in action. I want to share stories that have value.

You know how people have a focus? Like, they know where they’re going and how to get there? Or, at least, that’s what people show other people?

It took me over two weeks of writing out my thoughts to decide that the focus of this site, Bernard Walter, should be writing and photography. I came to the decision about fifteen minutes ago. It was such a revelation that I decided to stop journalling and write a blog post about it.

See, what I want to do is make writing and photography the foundations upon which I share my ideas through this site. I think it’s doable. I’m just not sure how interesting any of it will be.

For a while now, I’ve been struggling with what to do with this site. I haven’t been sure what it’s purpose it, other than a dumping ground for my ideas and stories. If that’s all it is, that’s cool, but I want it to be more purposeful. I want to share something with this site, if for no other reason than I can.

I’m not going to commit to anything but I’m just going to put this out there.
